Works Board Hears Offer By Developer To Dedicate Streets

Posted

North Center Development Inc., developer of Lakewood Hills Condos, has stated a desire "to dedicate their streets to the city of Warsaw."

A letter received Friday by the Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety asked the city to consider taking over the streets. If the city complies with this request, the streets will have to meet city specifications, which include inspections on street signs, street lights and asphalt conditions. Streets affected include Baythorne Drive, Channelview Drive and Lakewood Hills Drive up to and including the intersection of Lakewood Hills and Channelview.

The board tabled the proposal.

The low bidder on the Walnut Creek interceptor project wants to withdraw its bid.

Brian W. Houghton, consultant hired by Warsaw, said the city received bids from 11 contractors concerning the Walnut Creek interceptor project. Of those contractors, Leland Roberts Construction Co. is the low bidder. E. Scott Treadway, attorney from Lowe, Gray, Steele & Darko LLP, represented Leland Roberts in the meeting.

"It is not their desire to get into a dispute with the city," Treadway said, "They simply want to withdraw their bid."

Treadway said the company can't do the project for what was bid because the dewatering component was not included. But with the component added in, Leland Roberts still remains the low bid.

"I want to clean this works issue up," Mayor Ernie Wiggins said.

Leland Roberts will send a modification of their bid for the Board Works to consider.

In other business:

• The board approved an unpaid leave of absence for Jon Evans of the Warsaw Fire Department.

• Warsaw building inspector, Pam Kennedy, presented four compliances to the board for signatures. The four owners of the properties in question made corrections as ordered, thereby escaping the civil penalty. The board approved the release of these four property liens.

• The cemetery's request to purchase a used truck also was approved by the board Friday.

• The sewage department budget for 2000 was discussed at the meeting. "I have reviewed this," said Wiggins. "I have no problem with this." A study on the budget will be conducted this summer.

• The Stultz Realty parking garage lease was approved by the board at a rate of $1,300 per month.

• The board approved an agreement with Rodeheaver Auditorium for the city's 2000 Christmas party. Wiggins said moving the party to this location will be better for children and more family-oriented. "We would probably get better attendance," Wiggins said. The annual Christmas party is funded through donations from local corporations.
