WINONA LAKE - Construction crews have nearly completed work on the first three floors of the Winona Hotel.
The first phase of the renovation includes 13 two- and three-bedroom condominium units on the first three floors. They should be ready for occupancy next summer, according to Brent Wilcoxson of Winona Restoration.
The building, built in 1888, at one time featured running balconies off all the rooms. These will be back in place, offering views of Winona Lake on the south side and on two- thirds of the building on the "back side."
"There's not much of the original interior left after the dozen-odd remodelings over the last 100 years," Wilcoxson said. "We do have the two original staircases and we'll keep some tile floors."
The top floor will be remodeled in a second phase of work and it should be complete by the end of 2003.
In the 1890s there were 35 to 40 rooms for rent. A 1911 Winona Quarterly touted steam heat, rooms with a bath available at a starting rate of $2.50 per night. Significant additions brought the room total to 120 over the years.
The third phase of renovation will include the old kitchen and dining room.
