Editor, Times-Union: To hear official Washington tell it, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is the new poster boy for the Republicrats. He is praised as a fiscal conservative. No one seems to want to recall his activities under little George Bush Junior.
Daniels was Bush’s original budget director in 2001. In other words, the fiscal conservative Daniels oversaw the federal budget as it was making its precipitous dive from $236 billion surplus – then on a trajectory to eliminate the entire federal debt in a decade – to a $400 billion deficit by the time he left in June 2003. Plus, because a proposal developed on Daniels’ watch, such as tax cuts favoring the rich and unpaid for projects, including the invasion of Iraq and the new prescription drug plan, the fiscal situation of the federal government continued to sink over the ensuing years.
Oh, and what about the firesale of the Indiana toll road? At the time it was sold it cost $4.40 to drive from Illinois to Ohio. After it was sold into the plutocrats’ hands, they are charging $8.80 to across the state. That’s a 100 percent increase that could have been in the pocket of Indiana taxpayers.
Mr. Peepers, who seems to have lost his glasses, comes to town to visit the Chamber of Commerce. Remember, tax slaves, that it was the collaboration of the National Chamber of Commerce, the Republican Party and a gaggle of greedy corporations that conspired to move our industry to China. There were appropriations even given to assist corporations to move out of the country.
Now Mr. Peepers will be rewarded at the Republicrat convention for delivering Indiana into a “right to work for nothing” state.
