This season, the Warsaw Community High School Winter Guard hopes its show can reach for the “Gold”. “Our goal this year is gold at Division Finals,” according to coach Sarah Fox. “That is a score of 70 or above.” The Winter Guard’s show title also is “Gold”. It uses the song “Gold” by Linda Eder from the Broadway musical “Camille Claudel”. The Broadway song is about an artist who is longing for more when the best things in her life are taken away. “Most of the members (of the Winter Guard), over half, are in their first season of spinning,” Fox said. There are 12 girls in Winter Guard this year. Co-coaching with Fox this year is Leah Leland. Leland is the sister of Hannah Helman, who coached Winter Guard for three years. Choreographer for the show this year is Jeff Wrobleski, Indianapolis. They started rehearsing Nov. 7. Before Christmas break, the Guard practiced two times a week for 2-1/2 hours a day. Now, Fox said, they rehearse three times a week. The Warsaw team will see how close it is to the gold when they have their first invitational Jan. 21 at Greenfield High School. Their following competitions include Feb. 4 at DeKalb High School, Feb. 11 at Anderson High School and Feb. 18 at Heritage High School. On March 3, the Winter Guard will perform in exhibition at WCHS’s own percussion ensemble invitational. Division Finals are then March 10 at Franklin Central High School. “Since so many are beginners,” Fox said of this year’s group, “I think that as long as we are doing OK in our division with teams our size, in the middle, I’m OK with it.” The goal, however, is the gold.
