Winston Gladwell Montague, 93, of Warsaw, and formerly of Bourbon and Bradenton, Fla., died of natural causes at 9:20 a.m. Jan. 10, 2010, in his residence.
He was born Aug. 25, 1916, in McComb, Ohio, to Riley Isaac and Mabel Rader Montague. He married Mary Rader, who preceded him in death. He married Anna Marie King, who died July 16, 2001.
He attended school in McComb, Ohio. He was an Ohio Golden Gloves Boxing champion. Serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries.
For a time he drove a Greyhound bus, then became an over-the-road truck driver. He loved to tinker with things, talk to people, travel and fish.
He was a member of Bourbon First United Church of Christ and a former member of Bourbon Masonic Lodge 227 F&AM.
Surviving are eight daughters: Sally (and spouse Roger) McPeak, Pittsburg, Texas; Jeanene (and spouse Troy) McGuire, Snohomish, Wash.; Aleta Montague and Elaine (and spouse Bud) Wetzel, all of Winona Lake; Karen Horoho, Kokomo; Debra (and spouse Marvin) Eberly and Cheryl (and spouse Richard) McDonald, all of Warsaw; and Nancy Rockhill, Westfield; three sons: Tom (and spouse Val) Montague, Westminster, Colo.; Richard (and spouse Becki) Montague, Westfield; and Michael (and spouse Karen) Montague, Downers Grove, Ill.; 43 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jimmy; three brothers; a sister; and several grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, with the Rev. Charles Krieg officiating, and with military rites by members of Plymouth American Legion Post 27 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1162. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.
