WINONA LAKE - The Indiana Association of Cities and Towns announced Wednesday that Dr. Dane Miller has been awarded the 2002 IACT annual award for civic service for his contributions to the town of Winona Lake.
Over the last eight years, Miller has contributed more than $20 million in private funds to The Village at Winona restoration and the town.
President and CEO of Biomet, Miller also serves on Winona Lake's board of zoning appeals.
The Village generates more than 30,000 visitors per year and employs about 70 people. The restoration project involved the purchase and renovation of 35 historic structures and 21 acres of land.
Miller also contributed funds for fire equipment, park needs, street department requests and land for a hiking/biking path.
Presented each year to deserving communities and individuals in Indiana, the IACT annual awards represent outstanding achievements and service by municipal officials, communities and citizens.
Last year Winona Lake received one of six Community Achievement Awards for towns with populations under 8,000.
Through the efforts of Winona Restoration Partners LLC, a partnership between Miller and Brent Wilcoxson, Grace Schools Inc. and the town government, the town has undergone a community renaissance.
At the 2001 IACT conference Miller, Wilcoxson, Grace College president Dr. Ron Manahan, town council president Jeff Carroll and town clerk Retha Hicks accepted the award following a video presentation showcasing the town and other award winners.
The IACT awards will be presented at the 2002 IACT Annual Conference and Exhibition Sept. 17 at the Westin Hotel in Indianapolis.
