WINONA Lake - Winona Lake Town Council will seek bids to resurface Pierceton Road from CR 250E to Packerton Road.
At a meeting Tuesday morning, Larry Long, town engineer, said there are cracks in the road that need to be repaved.
He said the road needs a new aggregate base, base asphalt and overlay for better support.
Terry Howie, town council president, said the last time the road was resurfaced was 15 years ago.
Retha Hicks, clerk-treasurer, said the town has $80,000 in its motor vehicle highway fund, and $200,000 in its local road and streets fund to cover the expense of resurfacing the road.
Long said the estimated cost to resurface Pierceton Road is $128,000. He said plans are for the council to select a bidder and begin the work in September or October and have it completed before this winter.
Councilman Jim Lancaster made the motion for the town to seek bids for the project, and council woman Joy Lohse seconded the motion.
Howie and councilwoman Sue Gooding also voted in favor of the town seeking bids. Councilman Randy Swanson was absent.
Kim Nance, acting director for Kosciusko Economic Development Corp., gave a presentation to the council on KEDC, previously Kosciusko Development Inc.
Nance said KEDC is hiring a full-time director Sept. 1 after receiving funding from the city and county.
Nance said KEDC is working on retaining and attracting business to the county.
The council also approved submitting revisions to its fire prevention code to Jim Walmer, town attorney.
Walmer will review the revisions and compile an updated ordinance.
The council also approved a request from Mitch Titus, Winona Lake fire chief, to seek quotes to purchase a dedicated rescue vehicle not to exceed $50,000. Titus said his current vehicle's transmission went out.
The council approved an ordinance to allow the vacation of an alley between 308 and 208 Chestnut St.
Upcoming events in the town Saturday include Cardinal Services Duck & Run 5K at 8 a.m. at Winona Lake Park and a Duck Race in the canal at 11 a.m.; Aug. 13 events include a Business Technology Expo at the Orthopedic Capital Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a Village At Winona Arts Walk.
