WINONA LAKE - Three temporary employees may be hired by Winona Lake's street department to help with leaf pickup and the island storm sewer project, the town council voted Tuesday.
Two of the temporary employees will work through leaf season or until the end of the year, and one will work on the island sewer project.
The council also reappointed Roger Gelbaugh as the fire chief.
Sealed bids were opened for renovation of the public works building, with Easterday Construction, Culver, bidding $101,000, and Milestone Construction Inc., Syracuse, bidding $86,114.
The contract for the renovation project will be awarded at the council's next meeting, in November.
Council also passed two resolutions allowing for the sale of small pieces of property on Sunday Lane, on Chestnut and on Mineral Springs. The Mineral Springs property was purchased for $50; and the other two strips were purchased for $1 each by contiguous property owners.
Council president Brent Wilcoxson said the town's 1997 capital budget must be cut by $17,000 so the budget will balance. He assigned each council member the responsibility of coming up with $3,000 in cuts by the next meeting.
The town council will meet next at 6 p.m. Nov. 12.
