Winona To Close Streets On Island May 2

WINONA LAKE - Streets on the island will be closed from noon to 4 p.m. for bike races May 2. The closing was approved by the town council Tuesday.

Town coordinator Craig Allebach said there will be four 45-minute speed races around the island that Sunday with 15-minute breaks between races.

An uphill race also will be held on 12th Street that day.

Council members heard from public works superintendent Pete O'Connell that town employees will have to be certified and licensed before mosquito spraying is allowed this year.

He said the courses for certification must be taken at Purdue University, according to state law. Board president Jerry Clevenger asked if that law came out of the latest legislative session and O'Connell said it did.

"I didn't think they did anything last session. Let's just buy some cans of Off¨," he said, joking.

In other business, the council:

• Heard from town attorney Jim Walmer that the closing on 800 Park Ave. should be soon, that the final deed has been prepared. The property, seized by the Economic Redevelopment Commission through eminent domain proceedings last year, has been sold to Winona Restoration.

The building will be restored to its original 1910 design and used as a commercial building in the Village At Winona.

• Approved the purchase of a flow meter to measure the sewage going to Warsaw. Costs for the meter plus installation by Flow Technics is $5,500.

Five other vendors also bid on the work: S.C.W. for $7,600; D.W. Squared for $5,900; Master Meter for $7,200; and Underground Pipe for $6,200.

• Approved a refund of $200 for a sewer tap and $150 for a building permit to Tracy and Amy Marshall, who paid the fees but are not going to build a house now.

Allebach said the sewer tap fee usually isn't paid until right before the work is done and that building inspector Dick Leaf didn't do anything but issue the permit.

• Heard the greenway design should be finalized at the end of the month, which will be followed by bid-letting and the start of construction this summer.

• Heard from town marshal Malcolm Gilbert that the new police car has arrived.

Board members are: John Boal, Jeff Carroll, Jerry Clevenger and Rolly Ortega. David Delp was absent.
