Winona Street Work Continues

Posted

WINONA LAKE - Streets on the island should be passable by the end of this month, while work continues after installing sewer lines, the town council said Tuesday.

All of Court Street will be closed to parking today, Thursday and Friday as excavation of that street begins.

Old utility poles also will be taken out and utility lines will gradually be moved underground, the council said.

Curbs in some areas are being installed, with approximately 3,300 feet of curbs installed in two days, said town engineer Larry Long.

In other business, town council president Brent Wilcoxson appointed councilwoman Edna Gamble and himself to gather preliminary drawings and cost data for converting the quonset hut into a building housing all town offices.

The town has been investigating moving the police department and other town offices into the quonset hut or the lodge building. Both buildings are owned by the town's park department, and the park board has said it would not be interested in using the lodge for town offices.

The Winona Lake Police Department is looking for a new location since the land where it is located was purchased by a private company, Winona Restoration, and will be developed.

The town council also:

• - Passed a motion asking for a public meeting on proposed sewer rate increases.

• Asked for further study on providing insurance coverage for the county's Haz-Mat and Squad 70 teams.

• Thanked councilman Harold Dunn for developing the town's home page on the Internet. The page, which is still under construction, may be accessed through KCOnline.

• Agreed to close Park and Chestnut streets for this year's triathlon and for the 5K race on July 4 weekend.

The town council will meet next at 7:30 a.m. June 24.
