Winona Police Honored By State In Operation Pull Over

INDIANAPOLIS - The Governor's Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving, a division of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, recently paid special recognition to law enforcement departments statewide.

At the 2001 Operation Pull Over Traffic Safety banquet, Winona Lake Police Department received "Best in State" honors in the small police department category. Agencies were grouped by jurisdiction size using 1998 census population data. For this award, the jurisdiction's population must be fewer than 5,000. The department received a $4,000 grant and a recognition plaque.

Accepting the award was assistant town marshal Mike Albert, who serves as OPO coordinator for the department. Also attending the banquet representing the Winona Lake Police Department were deputy marshals Joe Bumbaugh and Carl Love and town coordinator Craig Allebach.

The banquet's purpose is to recognize and honor participants in OPO and commend them for their commitment and dedication to saving the lives of Hoosiers. Twenty-three law enforcement agencies and seven individuals were acknowledged for their exceptional efforts in their communities.

"More Hoosiers than ever are buckling up," said Jerry McCory, director of the Governor's Council. "Indiana also has achieved the lowest number of motor vehicle fatalities in the state's history. Winona Lake Police Department has done a tremendous job helping Indiana attain these accomplishments."
