WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Town Council Tuesday approved a motion for the fire department to purchase a fire truck.
The 75-foot 1984 used fire truck will be purchased for $10,000 from Kendallville Fire Department.
Winona Lake Fire Chief Mitch Titus said it has been difficult for the department to reach dormitories at Grace College with the current fire truck.Titus said the Kendallville department originally requested $20,000 for the truck.
He said the new fire truck will provide the department with 20 extra feet of ladder.
Councilwoman Sue Gooding said she supported the fire truck purchase.
"I think it is a good purchase and I understand it may not be a 20-25 year fix, but if it gets us five-to-10 years down the road, I am supportive of purchasing the fire truck," Gooding said.
Winona Lake Clerk Treasurer Retha Hick said the fire department has funds in its capital improvements fund to pay for the truck.
The new fire truck will replace WLFD's current fire truck, which will be sold.
The council also approved an ordinance that prohibits parking on the north side of 13th Street between Chestnut Street and Sunday Lane.
The fine for violating the ordinance is $25.
