WINONA LAKE - No decision was made by the Winona Lake park board Monday on whether or not to tear down Cottage Three on Park Avenue in Winona Lake Park.
Cottage Three is rotting away and is not in livable condition, according to park director Jim LeMasters. He said two local builders, Dick Taylor and Mike Deck, examined the cottage. Both said the estimated cost to repair the cottage would be between $8,000 and $12,000.
LeMasters also said both Taylor and Deck recommended tearing down the cottage and rebuilding it. Estimated cost to build a new cottage is between $15,000 and $20,000.
The three cottages at the park rent for $300 each. LeMasters said the park board would have to borrow money to build a new cottage. He suggested raising the rent to $400 if it's a nicer cabin.
"You're going to have to think about what you want to do," LeMasters told the board.
Board member Karen Wildman suggested having the other cabins looked at, too. The process of tearing down Cabin Three and rebuilding it will have to go through the town council first.
No other business was discussed because park board president Scott Nichols did not attend the meeting.
"We can call an emergency meeting if we have something come up," said Wildman.
Members of the park board are: president Scott Nichols, Karen Wildman, Veisa Staton, Willa Henry and Ivan Schuler.
