Winona Lake Reviews Trash Regulations

Posted

WINONA LAKE - Police in Winona Lake have checked out more than 30 cases of trash ordinance violations recently, and town marshal Malcolm Gilbert told the town council Tuesday that residents need to be aware of trash regulations.

Gilbert said trash containers must be metal or plastic, should be between 13 and 32 gallons, should have tight lids and must have two handles so they can be picked up by one man.

Trash bags should be put out no earlier than 30 minutes before the street department begins its trash route. The town will not pick up yard waste, building materials or tires, he said, and large items, such as furniture, may be picked up by special arrangement.

Residents with questions about trash regulations should call the street department at 267-2933 or the town offices at 267-5783.

Town council president Brent Wilcoxson asked councilman Dick Taylor to schedule a meeting of the island residents to discuss whether some island streets should remain one-way or change to two-way as the island streets are being repaved after sewer lines were installed.

The council also will have Gilbert look at speed violations on the island in response to a complaint from a resident.

Winona Lake's town council will meet next at 6 p.m. May 13 at the community building.
