WINONA LAKE - A sure sign of winter's approach is the annual lowering of Winona Lake to its off-season level.
According to George Menze, lake inspector for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the primary reason for lowering Winona Lake is to protect the seawalls from ice damage.
The dam keeper for Winona Lake will begin lowering the lake's level on Oct. 31, Menze said.
"There's a different purpose for dual levels, depending on the lake in question. For Winona Lake, it is to reduce ice damage, both to the seawalls and to the control mechanisms of the dam," Menze said.
The state's statute on lake levels mandates the dam gates remain 100 percent open from Nov. 1 to May of each year.
