Carolyn Condon talked about the Catherine Peachey Fund's Day at the Lake, which raises money for breast cancer research, at the Winona Lake town council meeting this morning.
"We may soon be calling it 'days' at the lake," she said after thanking the council and the Village at Winona for its support during the fund-raiser.
She gave a brief outline of events to occur this fall, Sept. 12-13, saying more will happen on Friday and less on Saturday.
The annual quilt show and sale will be Friday and Saturday, as usual; the "race" will become a walk; and the house tour will include the refurbished Winona Hotel.
Council president David Delp said he didn't think the council needed to approve the group's plans.
"We've given approval, are happy to have you here and want you to do it again," he said.
Brent Wilcoxson of the Village at Winona discussed this spring's annual art fair, June 7-8. He asked that parking spaces on the west side of Park Avenue be closed so vendors could set up booths in front of the businesses along that street.
"That will keep people from crossing the street into the park," he said, adding Grace College and Winona Lake Free Methodist Church have opened their parking lots to visitors that weekend. Fair-goers will be shuttled back and forth.
Wilcoxson also announced Don and Jan Parker will be operating the Clocktower Bakery in the building under construction at the corner of Auditorium Boulevard and Park Avenue.
Town manager Craig Allebach said there will be a presentation about the greenway trail April 22 at 7 p.m.
In other business the board:
Waived a building permit fee for Grace College "in this particular situation." The college applied and paid for the permit to use at the recreation center two years ago and did not use it. Last week, the building was dedicated and reconstruction will begin in March.
Heard from Jerry Clevenger the gate blocking Lexington Drive, off CR 250E, has been removed and appears to be open to the public. Clevenger said people had been using the drive to access their homes in the Heritage Lake subdivision.
Pete O'Connell, public works superintendent, said the road was gated and used by contractors. He wasn't sure why the gate was down now because it hasn't been improved. Lexington Drive leads into the final phase of construction in the subdivision.
Heard from Delp regarding statistics he received from the county's solid waste district. He said the district board he serves will be making a major decision about how the district is funded in the next couple of months.
Wilcoxson asked if a recycling pickup schedule could be set up for the Village because a couple of business owners recycle regularly. The Winona Lake recycling station was removed Dec. 31.
Town clerk Retha Hicks said Ameri-Waste would have to be contacted about Village pickup because businesses arranged their own trash pickup.
Town council members are Delp, Jerry Clevenger, Jeff Carroll and Rolly Ortega. Craig Snow was absent. The next meeting is March 11 at 6 p.m.
