Winona Lake: Grant received to add police officer

WINONA LAKE - The Winona Lake Police Department recently was awarded a grant for $100,000 through Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon's "Law Enforcement Assistance" grant program.

The purpose of the grant is to pay for another police officer in Winona Lake for three years. The program was a campaign promise by O'Bannon.

Winona Lake now has five officers, and Marshal Malcolm Gilbert said today he is looking forward to hiring a sixth officer.

"You take five officers for 24-hour coverage, with vacations and training and other time off, and it's not easy," he said. "With a sixth officer we can do a lot of different things."

Gilbert applied for the grant several months ago, and learned Friday that the department would get the money. He does not know when the grant will be awarded or the details of how it will be implemented.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department also received a grant for an additional officer.
