Winona Lake Approves Fire Department Roof Repair Contract

Posted
WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Town Council Tuesday approved a contract to repair the Winona Lake Fire Department's roof.

The council approved a $4,555 contract between Bambi's Roofing and the town.

Winona Lake Fire Chief Mitch Titus said, during the council's Aug. 25 meeting, the roof was wearing thin and needed to be repaired. In other business, Titus said he had received a letter from Brent Wilcoxson, Village at Winona managing director, requesting the fire department burn the wildflowers along Park Avenue.

The town has a no-burn ordinance, and Titus wanted direction from the council.

Council President Terry Howie said he was concerned with people who have health issues that would be affected if the burn was approved by the council.

Councilwoman Joy Lohse said J.F. New Associates is a leading expert in wildflower and native grasses and recommends burning off plants.

The council approved for Titus to speak with Wilcoxson for more details regarding the burn. Titus then will report back to the council.

The council wants Wilcoxson to be responsible for notifying residents if the burn is approved.

Also during the meeting, town engineer Larry Long provided the council copies of an inspection report for the town to receive some of the stimulus funds for work on Pierceton Road, Kings Highway and Park Avenue from the stop light to 12th Street. The funding, if received, would be for milling and paving.

Long also discussed creating additional parking spaces in the town.

Long presented parking lot photos of Roy Street at the greenway trail. He said he would have to obtain easements to create parking spaces there.

He presented two options for lots on Boys City Drive. The first option would allow for seven parking spaces with one-way traffic and 45-degree angle parking. Another option would be 90-degree parking allowing for 12 parking spaces.

Howie asked if there would be handicapped spaces in the lots. Long said there would be two spaces and a couple spots on Roy Street could be used as handicapped spaces.

Town Marshal Paul Schmitt updated the council on a proposed Winona Lake Police Department Volunteer Victim Advocate program.

Schmitt previously said the department is considering having a victim advocate to assist residents who are domestic violence victims.

Upcoming events in the town include a shop hop Friday; Saturday's events include a Lake City Runners race and car seat check at Kohl's; an adventure race is Sept. 19; and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk is Sept. 24 from 5 to 9 p.m.
