ELWOOD - Winona L. Barnett, 96, Elwood, died Dec. 30, 2010, in Community Parkview Care Center, Elwood.

She was born May 30, 1914, in Raleigh, Ind., to H. Edward and Lillian Louden Heath. On May 15, 1937, she married Robert M. Barnett, who died July 10, 2007.

She formerly worked as a teacher. She was a 1932 graduate of Raleigh High School. As a young girl, she raised Jersey show cattle and traveled to many cattle expos. She played in the New Castle Community Band and graduated from Indiana Central College in 1936. She taught music, history, physical education, Latin, English, directed choirs, bands, musicals and plays all in high school and completed her career at the elementary level. While teaching, she also gave private music lessons. After retiring from the public schools, she was active in the Each One Teach One program. She was active in the Evangelical United Brethren and United Methodist churches. She was also active in the Les Bonne Amiee home economics club. She was an avid collector of bells and had more than 500 bells from all over the world.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Joseph F. (and spouse Mavis) Barnett, Elwood; two grandchildren, Anna Barnett, Columbus, and David (and spouse Anna) Styers-Barnett, Indianapolis; great-grandchildren, Gillian Styers-Barnett and Norah Styers-Barnett, both of Indianapolis; five nieces, Raeanna Merritt, Joan Younce, Ann Jones, Leigh Baer and Susan VanZant; and a nephew, Steve Bell. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Phillip E. Barnett; and a sister, Gayle Adair (and spouse Heath) Garver.

Services will be at 7 p.m. today at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, Elwood, with the Rev. Chris Dare officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Friends Cemetery, Wabash.

Calling is from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
