WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Town Council heard Tuesday night that the town's fire department received an equipment grant recently.

During Tuesday's meeting, Kevin Bell, Winona Lake Volunteer Fire Department assistant fire chief, said the department received a $19,855 equipment grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The grant is through FEMA's Assistance To Firefighters Grant program. The department applied for the grant in March, and was notified last week that it will receive the funds.

The grant will allow the department to purchase two foam delivery systems. The systems allow foam to be used for the purpose of extinguishing a fire.

The department also will purchase safety harnesses for active firefighters, and emergency escape systems for firefighters to rapelle out of a window in instances of a fire emergency. The grant also will cover training to use the emergency escape systems.

The council also heard the fire department will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser April 17 at the fire department from 8 to 11 a.m.

In other business, the council tabled approving a neighborhood preservation ordinance, and approved the town seeking trash and recycling route pick-up quotes.

The council approved Craig Allebach to be re-appointed to Winona Lake Plan Commission, and Patricia Boyer and Ivan Schuler were appointed to Winona Lake Park Board.

Symphony of the Lake's "A Night of Love Songs" will be Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Rodeheaver Auditorium.
