Posted
WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Town Council today approved two bids for street resurfacing projects in the town.

The projects approved included resurfacing Kings Highway from Fourth Street to the stoplight at Park Avenue. The $49,888.58 contract is with Phend & Brown Inc.

The other project was a $38,863.53 resurfacing project for West Canal Street that also will be completed by Phend & Brown Inc.Also during the meeting, Public Works Director Pete O'Connell said a sewer and water line was hit Monday afternoon.

He said he received a phone call today at 1 a.m. notifying him the sewer line breaking caused sewer to flow into the basement of Westminster Hall, 200 Seminary Drive, on the corner of Chestnut and 9th streets.

O'Connell said Cripe Excavating, North Webster, was called to install a new sewer line and open the sewer line that was full of dirt and sand.

Dave Wolkins, Winona Lake, asked for an update on the Stonehenge street improvement project.

"I think $2 million for a project is a significant expenditure, and I was wondering if there will be a public hearing for improving the Stonehenge streets," Wolkins said.

The council approved the project in December and met with Stonehenge residents during a meeting in August 2007 and September this year to discuss the project.

Town Coordinator Craig Allebach said the council still needs to approve a bond for financing the project and a public hearing will be held after the bond is approved.

At its Oct. 14 meeting, the council tabled approving a lease for financing the Stonehenge road improvement project to further discuss the project.

The Prestwick project will include total reconstruction of the streets in the subdivision and storm drainage improvements. The Murfield subdivision will include street pavement repair and storm drainage improvements and an asphalt overlay on Pierceton Road.

Town engineer Larry Long said the streets need to be resurfaced due to moving concrete slabs.

Upcoming events in the town include Grace College Funfest Thursday at Gordon Recreation Center from 6 to 8 p.m.; Winona Lake trick-or treat is Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; and Second Sunday Series at Rodeheaver Auditorium is Nov. 9.

Other events include flu shots at the Winona Lake Senior Center Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to noon; Winona Lake annual community appreciation dinner Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m.; and Festival of Trees at Rodeheaver Auditorium from Nov. 19-23.
