WINONA LAKE - Local residents will face increasing traffic congestion if a bypass for the Winona Avenue - Argonne Road intersection is not found, the plan commission was told Tuesday.
Town Council President Brent Wilcoxson asked the commission to begin investigating the alternatives for bypassing the congested intersection northwest of the town.
"As I look at it, we need to do something in terms of roads," Wilcoxson said. "Particularly if the Billy Sunday Museum draws the visitors the state predicts."
The Sunday home was recently declared a historical landmark, and such designation generally means an increase in tourism, he said.
The best alternative Wilcoxson said could be looked at is widening CR 250E, between Pierceton and Wooster roads, and the construction of a new limited access road between south Winona Lake and Pierceton Road.
"I think there is a need to connect Southtown and the rest of Winona Lake to make a more cohesive town," he added.
In order to build a connector road to Southtown, the surveying project begun last year of the land between Boys Club and Roy Street would have to be completed.
The board directed town engineer Larry Long to complete the survey as soon as possible.
In other business, the commission recommended the town council place a .31-acre lot in the 1300 block of Sunset Drive up for public auction. An adjacent landowner has expressed an interest in purchasing the property.
