Winona Council Hears Concerns About Lions Bldg. Parking

Posted

WINONA LAKE - Jim Reeve of the Winona Lake Lions Club is concerned about the parking situation for the Lions' building.

Reeve, speaking at a Winona Lake Town Council meeting, said the "no parking" sign is on the wrong side of the street, across from residences.

He asked the restriction be switched to the residential side of Canal Street because the homeowners have their own driveways.

Two Scout troops use the facility, which also is rented for other events.

Reeve said a man has been hired to do maintenance and the group plans to paint the building the same color scheme as the Boathouse Restaurant.

Town coordinator Craig Allebach said he talked to Reeve and Malcolm Gilbert, town marshal, about the situation, and the police department has no problem with people parking on both sides of the street during a meeting or event.

Street department superintendent Bart Jones said the street isn't wide enough for vehicles to park on both sides and for emergency vehicles to get through.

Allebach said maybe an ordinance declaring an exception for Lions Club events could be drafted.

Kerry Robinson of Boys City Drive asked that his yard be repaired either by the town or by AmeriWaste. The garbage removal company's trucks are veering onto Robinson's property along the alley, causing 14-inch-deep ruts 3 feet into the yard.

He produced pictures to illustrate the damage.

Jones said the alley has been traditionally used for trash pickup and other companies haven't had trouble keeping to the middle.

"It's straight enough they can get through there," the street superintendent said.

Allebach asked Robinson what he would like to see done.

"I want my yard back," he said.

In other business, the board:

• Heard from engineer Larry Long, who said the College Avenue project is almost complete. Street lights will be operational when NIPSCO completes the wiring.

• Heard from Allebach, who thanked town council members for their participation in town events during the last three weeks.

• Heard from Kirk McCutcheon, of the publicity committee, who thanked council members and town employees for their participation in the Fourth of July event held in town June 30.

• Heard from Bill Crane, an organizer for the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society's "Light the Night" event planned for Sept. 20.

Crane asked for a $300 donation from the town to place a banner advertising the event on Center Street in Warsaw.

The board tabled Crane's request.

• Approved an appropriation to Kosciusko Development Inc. in the budgeted amount of $500. KDI president Joy McCarthy-Sessing attended the meeting and asked for $750, which was denied.

• Credited Winona Powder's sewage bill $470.70. The company has moved production and was being charged industrial rates.

Current and upcoming events were given as:

• Through Saturday at the Reneker Museum a new display about the Winona Railroad system; July 14, 1 to 4 p.m., Jeff VanHouten in the Artisan Court; July 21, 1 to 4 p.m., Rik Lovelady in the Artisan Court; and July 28 at 6:30 p.m. the King's Brass performs at the Hillside Ampitheater. The Winona Lake Free Methodist Church will sponsor a block party July 28.

Council members are Jeff Carroll, Rolly Ortega and Craig Snow. Jerry Clevenger and David Delp were absent.

The council meets the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. and the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 a.m. in council chambers at town hall.
