WINONA LAKE - The parking situation on the island is bad and sure to get worse as summer vacationers start to arrive.
That was the message Clarence DeTurk, 810 W. Canal St., had for the town council Tuesday. And he wants the council to do something about it.
"My concern is the availability of parking on West Canal Street," he said. "People on Court Street already park on Canal Street, so when the summer and pier people get here, there won't be enough parking."
DeTurk said the problem is compounded by the town renting 20-foot wide pier spaces along the canal. If the town is going to rent those spaces, it should provide them with parking elsewhere so the residents aren't inconvenienced, he added.
Council president Brent Wilcoxson said he was not sure if the town could legally rent out pier spaces and prevent the lessees from parking by those places.
"We need to get into the legalities," he said. "We'll have Jim Walmer (town attorney) look into it."
In other business, the council amended the town's garbage ordinance to encourage town residents to recycle. The amendment, however, is merely a formality, Wilcoxson said. It sets a limit of garbage to two 32-gallon containers per week, per residential unit.
"This is really no different from what we've been doing all along, it simply codifies it," he said.
Wilcoxson stressed the change applies to each residential unit, so a four-unit apartment building would be allowed eight 32-gallon containers.
Councilman Harold Dunn announced the council has not - and will not - recommend any contractor for installation of sewer line in Canaan Estates.
"We, as a council, need to be on guard in regards to Canaan Estates, that the town is not recommending any particular contractor for doing the sewer hook-ups," Dunn said. "I've been told by several residents that a couple of contractors have said they are officially authorized by the town to do the hook-ups, and that isn't the case."
Wilcoxson also announced the clerk-treasurer Retha Hicks has been certified as a municipal clerk by the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers.
"Less than half the clerks in the state have such a certification," he said.
