WINONA LAKE – Winona Lake Town Council Tuesday approved appointments for 2014.
Redevelopment Commission members are: Dennie Duncan, Dennis Daniels, John Elliott, Al Disbro, Alan Alderfer; park board members are: Rick Swaim, Jill Schroeder; board of zoning appeals: Jill Serbousek, Dane Miller; publicity committee: Aaron Scantlen; tree commission: Melissa Uthgenannt; and housing authority: Carolyn Stoll-Shanklin.
Also during the meeting, the council approved Bruce Shaffner to continue to serve as council president and Philip Hood as vice president.
The council approved a 2014 contract for town attorney Larry Long. Long’s contract reflects a 2-percent increase.
Shaffner said Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer has requested Winona Lake partner in the high-speed rail tier one environmental impact study. Winona Lake will consider donating $5,000.
Shaffner said Winona Lake Redevelopment Commission might want to look into the project and possibly give the funds. The council approved sending the request for funding to Winona Lake Redevelopment Commission.
Councilman Greg Winn said if the community participates in the study, it will be more likely to be chosen for the rail system.
Craig Allebach, town coordinator, suggested the old train depot on King’s Highway, Winona Lake, could possibly be a site for the train station because of parking availability.
Allebach reminded the council about a request that was previously made for a waiver of wastewater services for apartments that are being sold at 77 Kings Highway.
Allebach said he has met with the owner and recommended that they disconnect the wastewater lines or appear before the council to request a waiver.
