WINONA LAKE- Winona Lake Town Council continued discussion Tuesday night on its 2012 budget.

The council previously reviewed 2012 budget proposals for the police, parks and fire department at its Aug. 23 meeting.

Town salaries and wages have not yet been set. The council will wait until November to pass a resolution and ordinance for salaries for town employees.

The council approved reducing the building commissioner’s salary from $33,300 to $18,000.

The building commissioner’s hours have changed from 30 hours down to 18-20 hours.

The 2011 general fund budget is $1,290,672, and the 2012 budget proposal is $1,271,610.

The police department budget for 2011 is $298,645, and the 2012 proposal is $274,155. The parks department budget for 2011 is $38,950, and the 2012 proposal is $53,950.

The increase is attributed to a request for the parks department to hire two weekend lifeguards, and an increase in utilities, and money to resurface basketball and tennis courts.

The fire department budget for 2011 is $88,164, and the 2012 proposal is $95,950. The increase is attributed to the department requesting to purchase breathing apparatus and bunker gear.

The motor vehicle highway fund for 2011 is $680,213, and $699,640 for 2012.

The street department reduced its capital budget from 2011 by cutting $31,500.

The wastewater utility budget was $1,395,395, and was reduced to $1,373,195.

The 2011 central services budget was $872,555, and was reduced to $845,155.

In the street department budget, there was a $3,000 reduction in the gas budget, a $1,000 reduction in repairs and parts, a $3,500 reduction from the gravel budget, a $3,000 reduction from the asphalt budget, a $5,000 reduction from the bug spray budget, and a $1,000 reduction from the salt budget.
