WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake will receive transportation enhancement funds for the fourth phase of the Lake City Greenway project.

The funds from Indiana Dept. of Transportation will be used to construct a fourth phase of the Winona Lake portion of the Lake City Greenway. The town was notified Nov. 12 that it was awarded $635,950 in federal highway administration transportation enhancement funds for the Lake City Greenway project.

The total cost of the project is $908,500. The town will match the funds with $272,550. This will include cash, grants, and in-kind credits for land and right of way acquisition by the town.

Winona Lake has been working to complete the Heritage Trail section of the Lake City Greenway for more than 10 years, according to Town Coordinator Craig Allebach.

The first, second and third phases have been completed, leaving one more phase to complete the seven-mile Heritage Trail.

The final 1.85-mile segment, called phase four, will connect the existing trails to Grace College campus and Lakeland Christian Academy and its perspective sports facilities.

Due to estimated costs of the project, it was deemed necessary to separate phase four into two separate segments.

There was an application request for federal funds to assist with developing the first segment of the Heritage Trail.

The first phase will begin near the northeast end of Park Avenue and connecting through the wooded property formerly known as Boys City Drive toward the Grace College campus.

The trail will cross Pierceton Road near Miller Fields where a trailhead with parking and other amenities will be constructed. The trail will then travel east and north around the athletic fields and through the wooded area toward the Grace College campus where it ends. The total length of the first phase is approximately one mile. Plans are to complete the section of the trail by 2010.

The second phase will consist of a trail spur connecting the first phase to the second phase in the vicinity of the soccer fields and traveling easterly to end at CR 250E near Lakeland Christian Academy.

Sidewalks are planned as a separate project, which will connect many nearby neighborhoods to the trail near Lakeland Christian Academy.

There also are connector spurs to nearby neighborhoods to increase access to the primary trail network. The total length of the phase is approximately 0.85 miles. Plans are to complete the section of the trail by 2012.
