WINONA LAKE - Attorney Doug Lemon discussed an ordinance today with the Winona Lake Town Council regarding the vacation of platted public ways inside the site to be used for the orthopedic capital center.
Two locations on Hillside and Wood avenues are included in the ordinance, neither of which are developed. Both locations lie in and around the Gatke dump site, which is where Grace College is constructing the orthopedic center on Wooster Road.
The new facility will be used for Grace College sporting events, as well as business seminars, musical concerts and trade shows.
Adjacent property owner David Turner told the council he was pleased with the vacation and the plans for the new center.
The council unanimously approved the ordinance, but could not verify whether a second reading would be necessary. Councilman Jeff Carroll told Lemon he would discuss the matter with the town attorney to confirm if today's approval legitimizeS the vacation.
In other matters, members discussed an ordinance that would establish additional stop signs at Faunn Street and Lake John Circle.
Councilwoman Joy Lohse, who requested the ordinance be tabled during a Sept. 13 meeting to collect more information, encouraged the ordinance be approved.
"I met with property owners in the area, and speeding was prevalent even while I was there," Lohse said. "Children were also present and exposed to the roads. I think there is a need for this ordinance."
The council then approved the additional stop signs with a 3-2 vote.
Public Works Superintendent Pete O'Connell reported work will begin next week to resurface eight roads in the town. Those roads include:
Widaman Street from Roy Street to CR 225S.
Oakhill from School Street to its end.
Boys City Drive from Chestnut Street to the bike trails.
Fourteenth Street from Poplar Street to Chestnut Street.
Seventh Street from Kings Highway to Park Avenue.
Ninth Street from Chestnut to Park Avenue.
Union Street from Chestnut to Park Avenue.
Southtown Road from Packerton Road to William Drive.
The alley between Short Street, Kelly Street and Third Street.
Present council members were Carroll, Lohse, Jerry Patterson, Rolly Ortega and Dave Delp.
The next meeting is scheduled for Oct 11.
