WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Town Council Tuesday accepted a bid from Phend & Brown Inc. to complete the town's street resurfacing and storm sewer projects.
The town approved a motion at its Sept. 11 meeting to seek bids for nine street resurfacing and storm sewer projects.
Phend & Brown Inc., Milford, will do the work for $111,270.20. The town also received a $115,955.50 bid from Niblock Excavating Inc.
The projects include resurfacing the alley between 401 and 309 Administration Boulevard; South Union Street between Oakwood Avenue and Boys City Drive; Sunday Lane, 100 feet inches off of Chestnut Avenue; 15th Street from Chestnut Avenue to Kings Highway and Conner Street off Poplar Street; Walnut Street from 13th Street to 15th Street; Western Street and storm drainage work; the alley between Sixth and Seventh streets; and the alley between 13th and 14th streets.
Clerk-Treasurer Retha Hicks said the town hopes to complete the projects by the end of this year.
Public Works Director Pete O'Connell said he and Town Coordinator Craig Allebach looked at the streets that needed to be repaired.
Winona Lake resident Harry Langford, 1110 Court St., thanked the town for the work they have done on the Greenway. He said he uses the trail often and commended the town for the effort they have put into the trail.
He said he has participated in bike races in Colorado where bike trails go down the center of the street, and in San Diego where the trails are shared by bicyclists, people and cars.
Issues have been raised during past meeting by town residents regarding Greenway safety. Langford said if there are safety issues on the trails, it is grandparents and parents allowing their children and grandchildren to be unsupervised on the trail, walkers walking more than two abreast on the trail, and bicyclists not obeying stop signs.
Town Council President Dave Delp thanked Langford for his comments and said the town will look into the issues.
Allebach provided the council with a CR 250E project update.
The project started Aug. 8 and includes total reconstruction of the roadways, including new concrete curbs, a new storm sewer system and improvements at the railroad crossing.
The project is expected to be completed by June.
Allebach said Phend & Brown laid asphalt on Pierceton Road Tuesday and hope to have the road reopened by Wednesday.
He said the next phase will be resurfacing CR 250E by Heritage Lake Park and Lakeland Christian Academy.
Upcoming events in the town include the Winona Lake Fall Festival in the Village at Winona Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Huzzah Hoosier Pennant Vintage Base Ball Tournament Saturday; Second Sunday Series at Rodeheaver Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m.; Winona Lake trick-or-treating Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m.; and the Winona Lake Community Appreciation Dinner at Rodeheaver Nov. 9.
