SOUTH WHITLEY – Electric Consumer hosted its 21st annual student calendar contest for the 2019 cooperative calendar.

The contest provides young Hoosier artists an opportunity to express themselves and develop their artistic talent while possibly earning cash prizes and statewide acclaim. The contest is statewide, open to all grade levels.

Over 2,200 pieces of art from all over Indiana were entered in the contest.  Whitko High School art students continued a successful tradition this year, according to a news release from Whitko Community School Corp.

Award of Merit means these students make the first round of judging in their grade division. Only the 25 best from each grade level are chosen for the award of merit.

Winning students were, freshmen: Abby Arter, Kayce Sims, Lauren Hollenbaugh, Summer West, Bryce Tucker, Kaylee Gaff, Harley Bradley, Luke Rhoades, Myra Buckles, Ritchelle Stieglitz, Lazarus Neer; sophomores: Celeste Logan, Haley Howard, Ella Kay Danner, Hailey Elder, Johnny Couch; juniors: Hope Eberly, Aneka Paduga, Devin Blaine, Sidney Overmeyer, Julia Seifert, Shianna Bradley, Kaitlin Frank, Adrienne Aughinbaugh, Umut Boran; seniors: Reannon Hopkins, Jacqueline Werstler, Abigail Martin and Logan Busz.

Two honorable mentions were awarded to Whitko students. Honorable mentions are selected "at large" and whose artwork is to be included in the calendar. The two Whitko students who won honorable mention each received a $50 cash prize and their artwork will be featured in the May issue of Electric Consumer and printed within the 13-month calendar. The awards went to freshman Kayce Sims and Ezra Miller.

Whitko junior Kaitlin Frank also won top honors for the 11th-grade division in the state contest. She was awarded a $200 cash prize each, and her artwork will be featured in the May issue of Electric Consumer and printed as the cover of her month, November, within the 13-month calendar.

Whitko High School has had at least one winner every year since 2001 appear in the state calendar, except in 2015, the news release states. Whitko art teacher Daniel Malicki is proud of his students’ accomplishments and their pursuit for excellence in art.
