Winners Announced At Pierceton Fine Art & Writing Fair

PIERCETON - The Pierceton Chamber of Commerce and the Lakeland Art Association co-sponsored the Pierceton Fine Art and Writing Fair July 19.

The event was held at Brower Park on Ind. 13, and included displays in the RR Depot. The Pierceton Lions Club hosted a food booth.

At 1 p.m., the community gathered in the depot to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lakeland Art Association. Lila O'Connell introduced several VIPs, who shared historical information about the association's growth over the past half century.

Board members Ruth Skeel and Tony Garza presented certificates and monetary awards to winners of the writing competition. Abby Gibson took first and second place in the children's essay category.Adult essay winners included: Mark Magnuson, first place; Margaret Brewster, second place; Michael Garwood, third place; and Susan Davison, honorable mention.

Winners in adult poetry included: Mark Magnuson, first place; Brenda Houtz, second place; Rose Clark, third place; and Richard Davis, honorable mention.

O'Connell presented the Best of Show award to photographer John Stipp. Watercolorist Dick Heffelfinger received first prize.

Heffelfinger said, "I consider myself a regionalist painter and prefer to paint nature that appeals to me, knowing the history of the subject creates nostalgia."

Local artist Bev Garner won second place. Alice Martin and Lisa Chiddister of Alli Art received third place for unframed art. Among the watercolors exhibited by Karen Jones of Monticello, the painting of an egret attracted attention and brought her fourth place.

Fifth place went to Susan Karczewski, whose exhibit included an agate sterling and copper necklace, as well as vintage metal and sterling silver. Roxanne Coffelt's jewelry, earrings and a diachronic fused glass bracelet won honorable mention.
