William J. Prater

ELLINGTON, Mo. - William J. Prater, 73, courageously fought his final battle and emerged victorious Jan. 10, 2010, at the John J. Pershing VA Hospital, Poplar Bluff, Mo.

He was born Jan. 25, 1936, in Floyd County, Ky., to John and Lucy Manuel Prater. His wife, Diana, survives.

At a very early age he moved to Packerton with his parents and siblings. He was a graduate of Sidney High School, served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion and the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. For the past two years he lived in Centerville, Mo., with his beloved wife and friend of 14 years, and his very dear stepson.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and being in the great outdoors. He lived in many locations throughout his colorful life and touched the lives of many, many people, including several foster children. He cherished his entire family and loved them unconditionally. He was known as "William" to some and "Bill" to others. All knew him as strong and determined. His Cherokee ancestry was a major influence in the various roles he has filled throughout his lifetime. His Native American heritage had special meaning for him. His extensive life experiences were a valuable resource for many people. The stories he could tell were vast. Everyone enjoyed his storytelling. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Also surviving are a stepson, Eddie Justice; seven children: Michael Prater and Kathy Prater, both of Warsaw; Cpt. Steven (and spouse Pam) Prater, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; Debbie Prater, Boise, Idaho; Pam Prater, Avilla; Matthew Prater, Colville, Wash.; and Cpt. Jacob (and spouse Emily) Prater, Fort Sill, Okla.; five brothers: Hebert (and spouse Cora) Prater, Albion; Mander E. (and spouse Janavee) Prater, Roann; Delmar (and spouse Elva Mae) Prater, Claypool; Wilbur Prater, Larwill; and John (and spouse Ruth) Prater, Centerville, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucy Prater; a brother, Amon Prater; and two sisters, Oma Jean Prater Bradley and Thelma Prater Compton.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at McSpadden Funeral Home, Ellington, Mo., with Bishop Paul Oesterreicher officiating.

Calling is from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.
