William E. StatonNORTH MANCHESTER – William E. Staton, 81, North Manchester, died at 10:08 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 4, 1938, in Owingsville, Ky., to Russell Van Buren, and raised by Ewell “Duke” Purvis and Mary Alice Withrow Van Buren.

He married Betty L. Purvis on March 26, 1958. She passed away April 29, 2006. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56. William retired in 2001 from Manchester Foundry after 27 years of service.

At an early age, William found the value of hard work. After the eighth grade, William was forced to quit school and work in the tobacco fields to help provide for his family. This is a lesson he took on to when he had a family of his own and did the same for them. When his wife fell ill, he spent many years giving amazing care to her, making it possible for her to stay home. This past Thanksgiving, he was extremely happy to be able to spend it with his family. William enjoyed river fishing and his two dogs, Dakota and Red, known as “The Girls.” His family made the effort and repaid the kindness and love that he once showed so he would be able to stay at home.

William is survived by sons: Burnie (Val) Staton, North Manchester; Wayne (Luci) Staton, North Manchester; daughters: Nola (Tim) Hudson, Warsaw; Iva “Moe” (John) Hedrick, Rochester; brothers: Herman (Louise) Staton, Fulton County; Kenny (Judy) Purvis, Ocala, Fla.; sister, Anna Francis Goldy, Carlisle, Ky.; 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded by daughter, Phyllis Kay Shideler, in 1997;           three brothers: David Harrison Purvis, Ewell Gene Purvis,  Jimmy D. Purvis; sister, Jeannie Sue Shepherd; grandchild, Jarolyn Staton in 2010; and a great-grandchild, Emily Rose Clarkson.

Calling will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26 at McKee Mortuary, North Manchester. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at the funeral home with calling one hour prior. Pastor Ben Woodcox will officiate. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery, 600 Beckley St., North Manchester.
