Whitt Huffer loves to play wiffleball. Erin Shalley has a passion for serving the children in her community. So for the second time this year, the two local residents are combining their efforts, putting together a wiffleball tournament that will benefit children from low-income families wishing to participate in the Warsaw Little League next year. With the help of Lance Leeper and the Warsaw Little League, the tournament will take place Sept. 14 at Boggs Park. Money raised will help offset little league registration fees and equipments costs. “Wiffleball is a really fun, family-friendly game,” said Shalley. “Wiffleball is getting popular all over. And to be able to have fun, and give to the children in our community, this is a really neat opportunity.” The Legends of Lake City Wiffleball Tournament will begin at 9 a.m. on Sept. 14 and is open to the first 32 teams that register. Registration for the tournament is $50 per team, and teams can register and get more information by contacting warsawwiffleball@outlook.com The tournament will consist of round-robin play, followed by a two-hour break. During the two-hour break, Shalley said she would like to have a wiffleball clinic for kids, teaching them the rules of the game and hopefully to pass on the interest of the sport that is growing and growing in popularity. “Wiffleball is getting extremely popular,” said Shalley. “They have an indoor league in the winter at the Coliseum in Fort Wayne.” After the two-hour break, the top 16 teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament, with the championship game being played under the lights. The tournament champions will receive a trophy, T-shirts and paid entry to World Wiffleball Championships next year in Skokie, Ill. The tournament runners-up will also receive T-shirts. Huffer and Shalley teamed up in July and had a wiffleball tournament at Lakeland Christian Academy that helped raise money for the Beaman Home.
