Whitko junior Hanna Yohe is putting her good intentions to action Saturday. The three-sport student-athlete has organized Saturday’s Special Olympics bash, which will include a 5K run and a cornhole tournament in South Whitley’s community park. The cause is near and dear to Yohe’s heart. "I have a woman of special needs in my family who I am really close to, and being able to spend time with her and helping her smile is always a great pleasure for me,” she said via e-mail. “During those moments, it makes me feel like I am making a difference in her life. “I then attended a leadership conference at Grace College, and they talked a lot about helping out special needs kids, which is always a great idea, and my dream job is to become a nurse in the special needs field. I wanted to take the time to create this event in order to help special needs kids, and to show everyone that they are a part of us, just like anyone else in society. I have been fundraising for charities like this since my freshman year, and I plan to continue doing so for as long as I possibly can.” Registration for the 5K begins at 8:45 a.m. at the fire station, with the race starting at 9:30. Sign-up for the cornhole tourney is in the town park at 12:30, with the competition starting at 1 p.m. The race is $20 per person, and the cornhole tournament is $20 per team. Walk-ups are welcome.
