Whitko Pay To Play

Editor, Times-Union:

I wanted to let parents of the Whitko School Corporation know what I found out about "Pay to Play."

At the last school board meeting, I told the school board what the people who voted for them wanted and it wasn't "Pay to Play." I encouraged them all to think hard about passing this rule. I must say they did a great job debating the issue. The pay to play did pass; however, they made a point to say that "it" can be revised as needed.

I also asked if there would be sanctions to a school system if they didn't adopt new "rules" set forth by the state. "Yes" was the answer, in certain circumstances. I asked them then what are "they" (the school board) for. I also asked, "Well then, isn't that dictatorship?" Mr. Clason merely shrugged his shoulders.

What is a school board for if not a punching bag for the community and a scapegoat for the state? Because they have to bring the information that the state hands them and give it to the people. Then they have to vote on it, knowing that if they don't the state will take away money from the school. So it's not a real vote at all, but a dictated law that the school board can't do anything about and has no real power in anything that is issued by the state. However, the state can come back on the school board when the citizens are outraged and say, "Well, your school board passed it."

I am now headed to the state house. If a school system can balance its own budget without money being taken away from them by the state, then why not?
