Whitko Nets Win Over Wawasee

SYRACUSE - Wawasee topped Whitko 4-1 in boys tennis action Tuesday.

Whitko's Justin Roman beat Mickey Ashpole at No. 1 singles in three tough sets 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 for the Wildcats' lone win.

Wawasee got wins from Kyle Farrel, Carter Ploszek and doubles teams of Andy Cole and Kyle Hollar and Blake Knisely and Logan Pilcher.

Wawasee also won the JV match, 3-0.

Wawasee hosts Central Noble today, while Whitko is at Triton Thursday.

At Bluffton, Matt Purdy won a singles match and Michael Good and Mitch Eads won a doubles match in a loss to Bluffton Tuesday.

Both of those wins for the Squires went three sets.

In junior varsity action, Bluffton won 3-2 as the Squires fell to 1-2.

Manchester (1-2) will be at Huntington North Thursday.

At Lakeville, Triton swept a tennis match Tuesday to remain undefeated in the Northern State Conference.

All five varsity matches went to three sets as Art Blackmer, Adam Heckaman and Kevin Escapule won singles matches. Schuyler Stutzman and Kent Roberts won a doubles match along with Justin Staublin and Seth Bowers.

In junior varsity action, Triton beat LaVille 3-1.

Triton (2-1, 2-0) will host Plymouth today at 4:30 p.m.

Warsaw Classic

Northfield swept both titles of the Warsaw Classic Tuesday.

Warsaw finished second in both races.

The state-ranked Norse took the five places to win the boys race by 34 points over Warsaw, while Northfield took the girls race 27 points.

Tippecanoe Valley finished fourth in the boys race and fifth in the girls.

In the boys meet, Huntington North had eight of the top 15 finishers.

Manchester's Derek Miller placed seventh overall with a time of 18:19.

In the girls meet, Huntington North had 10 of the top 15 finishers. Shay Knecht placed third for the Squires in the girls meet. Whitko's Angel Puckett won the event with a time of 16:28.

Manchester will host Valley Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

At Bourbon, Triton defeated Bremen Tuesday in both boys and girls meets in the Trojans first home cross country meet of the year. LaVille was also at the meet but did not have enough runners to score.

Mason McIntyre won the event with a time of 17:46, and Nate Gephart placed second just two seconds behind McIntyre.

In girls action, Shelly Miller ran away with the victory in a time of 17:47. Reghan Kreft took second with a time of 19:15.

Triton will compete in the Caston Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.

At South Bend, Rudy Ramirez stopped 22 shots, and Brian Watson had two goals to lead Warsaw to the win over South Bend Riley.

Waggoner opened the scoring up with a goal in the first half, while Brian Watson then scored the next two goals before Juan Garcia finished the scoring for the Tigers.

Garcia and Waggoner also added assists.

In junior varsity action, Warsaw defeated South Bend Riley 5-0 to improve to 2-1 on the year. Adam Sisson and Ryan Hill each had a pair of goals and Chad Fisher added another. Riley had just three shots on goal in the loss.

Warsaw (2-1) hosts Concord Thursday in its first Northern Lakes Conference game of the season.

• Volleyball

Manchester Def. Wawasee

6-15, 15-10, 15-12

At North Manchester, Manchester upped its record to 5-1 on the season with the three-game win over Wawasee Tuesday.

The Squires dropped the first game, but rebounded to take the next two.

Jessica Hicks got nine kills and three digs for Manchester, while Carrie White added six kills and six blocks. Megan Eckert added 22 assists and two digs. Jenny Brubaker got seven blocks.

Shanna Zolman led the Warriors with 13 kills and three blocks. Angie Beer added seven kills and five digs, and Jennifer Mason got six kills and seven digs.

Wawasee won the JV match, 15-2, 15-7. Staci VanLue had four kills for Wawasee, while Candice Brown added six assists, and Kim Likens got five digs. The Warriors are now 3-3.

Erin White and Ann Harms had four attacks.

Whitko is at North Miami Thursday, while Wawasee (3-7) hosts Plymouth Thursday.

At Syracuse, Warsaw swept a pair of freshman volleyball matches Tuesday.

Against Wawasee, Holly Stackhouse led Warsaw with eight kills, and Leah Kiphart had 16 assists. Against Valley Stackhouse had five kills, and Jill Shipley had eight aces.

For Wawasee, Monica Wilson had four kills against Warsaw and three more against Valley. Caitlin Thornburg had four aces against Warsaw.
