PIERCETON - Whitko Middle School is kid tested and mother approved.
That was the sentiment of Penny Brown, an amateur videographer who tracked the life of an average seventh-grader at the Larwill school.
Brown shared a sample of her video at the Whitko Community School Board meeting Monday. She told the board when she first asked her seventh-grade son, Jason, about the project he was hesitant.
"His reaction was, 'No way, no how was his mom going to follow him around school,' but he finally came around," Brown said.
"I saw that kids weren't as wild as I thought they'd be, boys still huddled up in the halls watching girls as they run off to check their hair."
At the end of the day Brown said she concluded Whitko has teachers, staff, bus drivers and custodians who care about kids and their future.
In other business, Bob Huffman, director of curriculum, shared the district's ISTEP scores, reporting that the overall picture is pretty good. Grades three, six, eight and 10, on average, outscored or tied state standards in two of the three categories.
"We don't want to be satisfied with average, we want to try to excel in all areas," said Huffman. Overall, Huffman evaluated the current status as exemplary when compared with schools in the same league as Whitko.
Also announced at the meeting was the PTA Expo '97. The expo, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, will feature sessions on fun ways to help children read, time management techniques, conflict mediation and other subjects. Parents are encouraged to attend.
