PIERCETON - Whitko Community School Board received more than $10,000 in Indiana School Improvement monies from the Indiana Department of Education for improvements in student scores.

At Monday night's board meeting the incentives from the state were formally accepted. School board president Terri Collier congratulated the teachers, parents and students for working to make the improvements possible.

Bob Huffman, director of curriculum, explained that a school must improve in at least two of four areas (language, math, total battery or attendance) to be eligible for a monetary award.

The IDE looks at areas of improvement over the last three years. Huffman said money was awarded to each school in the district. Pierceton Elementary, improved in language, total battery and attendance, will receive $2,739; South Whitley Elementary, which improved in language, math and total battery, will receive $2,416; Whitko Middle School will receive $1,991 for improvement in math and attendance; while Whitko High School will receive $3,342 for improvements in math and total battery.

The board also accepted three other grants.

The school corporation received $1,949 from the Indiana Arts Commission to support the district's participation in the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra Educational Children's Concerts.

The School Age Child Care Program received $3,915 from the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration.

An $8,048 Title VI grant was accepted for school technology.

In other business, the board approved Deb Thomas' reappointment to Pierceton/Washington Township Park Board for a three-year term.

The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the administration building.
