MARION – The Whitko boys track team won five different events en route to taking home the Three Rivers Conference title Tuesday night at Indiana Wesleyan University. The Wildcats had 122 points to outdistance Rochester’s 103-point second-place effort. Manchester was fifth with 49.5 points and Tippecanoe Valley tied for sixth with Southwood, each finishing with 46 points. In the girls competition, Maconaquah won the title, with Whitko finishing third, Manchester fourth and Valley ninth. Whitko’s Alex Morales won the 110 high hurdles in 15.45, and Garrett Elder won the 100 in 11.62. Conner Sherwin won the discus, Gavin Howard the shot put and the 4x100 relay team of Elder, Brady Weeks, Alex Wilson and Gavin Powell emerged with a conference championship. Alex Wilson was second in the 100, 200 and long jump for Whitko. Walker Hobbs was the runner-up in the shot out, and Weeks was second in the 300 hurdles. “I was really impressed with our kids. Their effort and determination paid off,” said Whitko head coach Ron Cherry. “They remained focused as they endured rain and an hour-and-a-half lightning delay to win the meet. “Not only did we win five events, but we had lots of second-place finishes which helped add to our point total. We had multiple (personal records) across the board that did not necessarily win events but helped us score enough points to win.” Tippecanoe Valley’s Neil Clampitt won the 200, and Thomas Rohr of Manchester won the 3200. Whitko’s Kaitlyn Reed was busy as well. She won the 100 and the high jump, was second in the 200 and fourth in the long jump to help lead the Lady Wildcats to their third-place finish. Manchester’s Rae Bedke was the winner in the 1600, and teammate Bailey Sewell won the discus. The Lady Squire 4x800 relay team won as well. All three schools now head to sectional competition; the girls will compete at the Rochester Sectional May 17, the boys in the Bremen Sectional on May 19.
