SOUTH WHITLEY — The Whitko baseball team opened its 2013 season Saturday at home, earning a split with Marion. In the doubleheader, the Whitko Wildcats gave up seven runs in the fifth, losing 9-5 in Game 1, but came back to win the second game 10-9, by scoring seven runs of their own in the fifth. In Game 1, Alex Stoddard was hit with the loss, going four innings and striking out eight. Offensively, Tanner Gaff was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a stolen base, while Ethan Nicodemus was 1 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a run. At the dish in Game 2, Avery Robbins was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Gaff belted a home run, and Nicodemus pitched 5-2/3 innings, getting the start, then returning to get the save in the seventh following Gaff’s sixth-inning sole home run.
