PIERCETON – Whitko School Board held a short meeting Monday.
They approved advertising the district’s annual report and advertising for the latchkey program, as required each year.
Superintendent Steve Clason said if there are latchkey providers available, the district would be happy to hear from them.
The board also approved transportation for preschool students. Parents must request transportation to private preschools in writing, Clason said, and if a bus goes by the school, the children will be delivered to the facility.
The board approved special services wage scales for the 2012-2013 school year as: Jennifer McCauley, 94 days at $28,496.15; Amanda Kling, 136 days at $36,895.91; Kelly Goode, 162 days at $36,529.24; and Victoria Cornell, 120 days at $30,199.57. The salary for Jonna Watson, psychologist, hasn’t been determined.
Textbook rental fees also were approved.
At Pierceton Elementary School the textbook rental fees are $144.80 for kindergarten; $158.89 for first grade; $138.89 for second grade; $140.30 for third grade; $145.83 for fourth grade; and $134.98 for fifth grade.
At South Whitley Elementary School the textbook rental fees are $134.23 for kindergarten; $155.79 for first grade; $137.54 for second grade; $126.50 for third grade; $117 for fourth grade; and $124.42 for fifth grade.
The course fees at the middle school and high school vary according to the classes selected.
The board approved the media list for news releases and announcements naming five newspapers, three radio stations and two online news locations.
Handbooks for students and parents, faculty, administration, support personnel, substitute teachers and transportation were reviewed.
Board member Jorell Tucker noted there is a new rule regarding the length of shorts and skirts, in that the length is to be at or longer than the fingertips when the wearer has their arm along their side.
Tucker also expressed concern about children in South Whitley crossing Ind. 5 on their way to school. He said the students south of the railroad tracks and north of the bridge walk to school and there is no designated crosswalk.
Clason said at one time there was a person designated as a crossing guard, however, the students crossed the highway wherever they pleased, not necessarily crossing with the guard.
In personnel matters, the board approved:
The discontinuation of Lisa Shisler as extracurricular instrumental music director at Whitko high and middle schools; resignation of Adam Gray as girls junior varsity basketball coach; and the retirement of Walter Malicki as WHS art teacher.
The transfer of Sue Paulus from health clerk to office assistant at Pierceton Elementary School; Sara St.Clair as corporation nurse; Whitley Staller as WHS office assistant; Joseph Shepherd as extracurricular instrumental music director at Whitko high and middle schools; and Casey Stouffer as athletic director.
