AKRON - Those fighting cancer should never fight alone. That is one of many reasons Wheels On Fire Cancer Crusaders was born.
A mission of Beaver Dam Community Church, the group raises funds to help those with cancer in Kosciusko and Fulton counties, according to a provided news release. The Smash Out Cancer event is the major fundraiser of the year.
Held at the Akron Community Center at 815 E. Rural St., Akron, patrons of the event will be treated to food, entertainment, live auction and a lighted memorial service.
Starting at 4 p.m., walking tacos, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and pork burgers will be available to curb appetites. Chips and drinks to round out the meal and Igloo ice cream to satisfy dessert cravings will also be plentiful.
New to this year’s event is the inclusion of kids’ activities. There will be an area of kids’ games, including skee ball, ring toss and putt-putt. Tickets may be purchased in the game area and prizes will be awarded.
Entertainment will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with Ed Rock at the microphone. Deb Collier’s School of Dance will take the stage at 5 p.m. Singing some crowd favorites at 5:30 p.m. will be Mike Bowers and Kylene Crabb rounding out the night, starting at 6 p.m.
Over 25 donated items up for bid hit the auction block at 6:30 p.m. Donated items this year include an Adirondack chair, recliner, hand-crafted metal and wooden flags, helicopter ride, custom-made Spaulding wood shelf, sofa table, sports tickets and diamond bracelet and more.
The live pie auction begins after the donated items are finished. Approximately 50 pies and cakes, flavors of all kinds, will have bidders battling it out for the pie of their choice.
Ending the night is the Light Up Your Life memorial service. Those battling cancer and those who have been lost to the disease are honored and remembered in a ceremony where names are read and candles are illuminated in their honor. This year, the memorial also includes a memorial ornament.
