I agree with Sara Lowe. It is always a tragedy when any child is accidentally hurt or killed by a gun. But if we ban guns to prevent future accidents, isn't there an obligation to ban playground equipment, bikes, skateboards, swimming pools, all known food products that cause allergies, fireplaces, cigarettes, decorative candles, prescription medication, bunkbeds, carnival rides, ice skates and a plethora of other things that hurt, mame or kill children every day? While we're at it, let's ban driver's licenses for 16- to 18-year-olds and prevent thousands of accidental deaths each year.
Sara chooses to see only the negative aspects of guns. But for every tragic story written about a child hurt or killed by a gun, there are hundreds of other stories never told about individuals who use their guns responsibly.
I taught both of my daughters to respect and handle a gun. If God forbid they ever have to brandish one to thwart a rape or assault, I doubt the story will make the newspaper or nightly news.
Sara has the blessing and privilege of living in an affluent, cozy, East Coast enclave where the police presence is high and crime is low. Most Americans are not as fortunate.
