WHA Board Hears Voucher Program Update

Posted
Warsaw Housing Authority Board of Directors Monday heard an update on its housing voucher program.

WHA received approval six weeks ago to issue Housing Choice Vouchers to as many families as needed for housing outside Warsaw city limits.A Housing Choice Voucher is designed to assist families below 50 percent area median income to have assistance toward rent and utilities. The family pays 30 percent of its monthly income and the Housing Voucher pays for the remainder.

Sandy Blankenship, WHA manager, gave an update on Kosciusko County Housing vouchers.

She said there were 186 applicants contacted by letter or phone, 46 applicants did not respond, 54 applicants were interviewed to receive the vouchers, and 22 applicants did not show up for their scheduled voucher appointments.

There were 43 vouchers issued, 58 pre-applicants filed, 24 pre-applicants not yet contacted, 15 returned landlord information, and 10 possible contracts for November.

The Kosciusko County vouchers are under a time limit. Housing Voucher Choice Voucher pays for the remainder.

The Kosciusko County vouchers must be leased in units before Dec. 1.

There have been 96 families on a waiting list that had requested assistance in the last 12 months.

WHA is asking anyone in need of housing to contact its office to fill out a pre-application, and for landlords in Kosciusko County to contact WHA if they have vacant housing units.

People who need housing assistance or have vacant rental units can call WHA at 574-269-7641 or visit the office at 827 S. Union St. Suite 230, Warsaw.

In other business, the board heard from board president Bob Kline.

Kline said the board met in executive session recently to discuss giving Pam Kennedy, WHA executive director, a raise.

The board recommended Kennedy receive a raise, but Kline said Kennedy rejected having her salary raised because there is not enough funds in the budget to cover the raise.
