WFD Seeking Appraisals For New Station

Posted
Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety approved for Warsaw-Wayne Township Fire Territory to seek two property appraisals for a possible new fire station.

The appraisals are for ground on CR 200S inbetween Ind. 15S and County Farm Road.

Warsaw Fire Dept. currently has two fire stations. Fire Station One is at 109 Main St., and Station Two is at 2204 E. Center St.

Mike Rice, WFD chief, said a consulting firm conducted a study in October 2009 on the fire department's coverage area that also studied the growth of the city.

The consulting firm recommended a fire station be located on the south side of Warsaw in the Ind. 15S and CR 200S area.

"The new fire station would provide quicker response times, and we want to be able to provide the same level of service on the south side of the city as other areas," Rice said.

Rice said when the fire territory was formed the township transferred funds into the territory budget specifically to purchase ground for a possible third fire station, and there are funds currently in the fund to purchase the land.

Rice said the Warsaw-Wayne Township fire territory board has approved for the territory to seek quotes.

In other business, the board approved new hire Angela Howard to serve as records clerk at Warsaw Police Department.

Howard will replace Kelly Geiger, who is deputy clerk treasurer at city hall.

The board also approved creating an administrative assistant position at Warsaw Police Dept.

The person who is hired as administrative assistant will replace Jerry Laurien, who is now the information services manager at WPD, but will retire in February.

The administrative assistance position is a new role in the department with a new title.

A person has not been hired at this time for the administrative assistant position, but there have been interviews, according to Jennifer Whitaker, Warsaw human resources director. The board reviewed a list of equipment and estimated costs that needs to be replaced in the future for the Warsaw Street Department.

The board also approved a contract with Mike Valentine for 2011 to continue to provide legal services for Warsaw.
