GOSHEN- It was evident early on that no matter what defense Wawasee played or how well they handled the ball it would be tough for the Warriors to scrap out a win against a bigger and stronger Westview team. Coach Toni Clayton's team played Westview to a 4-2 loss early in the season.
Unfortunately for the Warriors and their fans that withstood 40-degree weather accented by rain and fierce winds, the outcome wasn't nearly as in question as before with Westview cruising to a 10-1 victory.
Westview's Jamie Gallmeyer showed why she's among the top 15 in the state in goals scored. She shredded Wawasee's defense early and often. She had the assist on the first goal of the evening by Jane Sherman just six minutes into the match.
Gallmeyer got in the act herself at the 27:35 mark rebounding a ball that bounced off the crossbar and sending it home.
Despite the early onslaught Clayton kept her team upbeat. Chants of "Work together." Were sprinkled among the frequent Westview goals.
The Warrior program, thin to begin with due to some players choosing not to return before the season, is one in transition. For the 6 seniors on the Wawasee squad, Clayton is their third coach in four years.
For Wawasee this season while its goal was to face Warsaw one more time, they had played the Tigers to a 3-0 loss several weeks ago, they were pragmatic about things.
"We set personal goals this season." Said Clayton. "And I think we achieved those. I'm proud of the way we went out and competed and I really think we improved as the season went along. Of course we wanted to win but I think we were realistic as well in what our goals should be."
If the Warriors can take anything into next year it may be the second half.
Westview played their subs quite a bit in the second half but their starters came in and played the last 20 minutes. The second half saw Wawasee play their fellow Warriors more evenly at 3-1.
Wawasee's lone goal came a minute into the second half when senior Kim Hoover found freshman Megan Walker.
For a team that has six freshmen and no JV program there is also valuable experience earned.
"I think that our freshmen got some great varsity time this year. We don't have a JV team and while at times I wish we did because physically it was harder for them to go against older players it did help."
