Welfare

Editor, Times-Union:

I recently talked to the head of the Family and Social Services Administration in Indianapolis to ask him why the amount for assets a person can have in order to get Welfare assistance has not changed. As a person on Disability and Medicaid who works part-time, I have had to report to them for nearly 15 years. The figure was $1,500 when I started that many years ago and is still that amount in 2008. The man I talked to said this figure was set by Congress back in the 1970s. In my opinion, it is long overdue for an increase. What do you people in the public think?

There is only one way that it will get changed. That is for we who live and work in this county to contact our Congressman who work for us in Washington, D.C. How many raises have they voted for themselves in the last 30-35 years? How man of them are living, or trying to exist, on a poverty level income? This just is not right. Too many retired and disabled people are being misused.

If you don't like this fact, you can look in your phone book for the information to write, e-mail or call your Congressmen to ask them to change it now. As I have said before, change will not come unless we, the public, take action. Mark Souder even has an office in the Boathouse in Winona Lake. We should not procrastinate or think we will let someone else handle it.

If we used the energy we burn complaining about things and channeled it in a positive direction to get things changed, what kind of things do you think would happen? This country and our lives will be what we make them.
