The Warsaw Education Foundation awarded more than $11,000 in Red Apple Grant funds to 12 Warsaw Community Schools teachers. The teachers began the 2013-2014 school year working on projects that will strengthen reading skills, introduce engineering concepts and provide science materials to study molecules, weather systems and human anatomy. Their students will benefit from the in-depth learning these opportunities will provide, according to a press release from WEF. Red Apple Grants are awarded to teachers for classroom materials as well as schoolwide projects that advance enrichment opportunities, support innovative and inventive teaching, and promote academic exploration. Red Apple Grants awarded are: Literacy: • Gina Courtois, Madison Elementary, Everyday is an Adventure – $1,500 • Hilary O’Connell, Madison Elementary, Read to Me ... and I Will Read to You! – $1,496.16 Life Skills & Nutrition: • Monique Lewis, Gateway Education Center, School Garden Project – $1,500 • Jennifer Phillips, Gateway Education Center, The Sunshine Garden – $263.39 Science: • Scott Bailey, Washington STEM Academy, Let’s “BEE” Aware, Introducing Students to the Life of Bees – $1,000 • Andrew Bass, Edgewood Middle School, Weather Station – $1,230.85 • Cathy Hood & Abigail Dutcher, Washington STEM Academy, Human Anatomy: How Does It Work? – $1,500 • Rose Love, Warsaw Area Career Center, Molecular Puzzles – $1,460 Engineering & Technology • Abbi Richcreek, Warsaw Area Career Center, Warsaw Underwater Treasure Hunt – $1,499.95 Founded in 1987, the Warsaw Education Foundation champions academic innovation and excellence in Warsaw Community Schools.
