WEF Awards Red Apple GrantsWarsaw Education Foundation recently awarded more than $6,000 in Red Apple Grants to eight teachers from six Warsaw Community Schools.
Red Apple Grants are awarded to teachers for classroom projects as well as school-wide projects that advance enrichment opportunities, support innovative and inventive teaching, and promote academic exploration.
Red Apple Grants awarded for fall 2009 are:
n Lisa Carpenter and Rachael Hoffert, Warsaw Community School Corp. literacy coaches, for their Literacy Coaching Resources program that will provide books and videos for teachers' professional development in the latest research and current "best practices" of teaching reading.n Nick Walenga, Edgewood Middle School, for his You're in the Driver's Seat project to purchase computer software that will allow students to design, create and evaluate wooden dragsters for aerodynamics, speed, stability and strength of construction.
n Julie Martin and Michelle Yantz, Eisenhower Elementary School, for their Authoring a Book project that engages third-grade students in the writing process by having them author, illustrate and assemble their own hardbound book using computer technology.
n Rebecca Crim, Leesburg and Jefferson elementary schools, for her World Music Drumming program to allow students to experience various types of music and culture in order to develop a life-long appreciation for the arts.
n Carla Milliman and Jeanie Woods, Lincoln Elementary School, for their Music Makes the Kindergarten World Go Round program to integrate rhythmic instruments and music into the kindergarten classroom to enhance skills needed for math, reading and writing.
Founded in 1987, the Warsaw Education Foundation has awarded nearly $200,000 in grants to teachers in Warsaw Community Schools through the Red Apple Grant Program. Warsaw Education Foundation believes that investing in academic excellence today will return excellent leadership tomorrow.
